Realigning our focus in the digital era—become more productive

By

George Orwell penned a book known as 1984 and in it, he feared that those in power would conceal information and ban books so that the public remain ignorant. Coming to think of it, it is now the complete opposite.

At the moment, there is too much information that the problem now is that the good and important information has been submerged in the sea of irrelevancies. In this digital world, there is no need to ban books because no one would want to read them. We get so much information that we have been reduced to passivity and egotism. We have become a trivial culture, preoccupied by hollowness and ineffectuality.

Our infinite desire to amuse us will ruin us. What will kill us is not pain but pleasure because we have so much of it. We have entered into the realm of reactive consumption of information instead of proactive learning. Here are some suggestions to gain control of your life in the digital world:

• Spend time cultivating knowledge on topics that you care about and which are important to you. Your time is valuable and so you should invest it wisely. Understanding where your time is going is very important.

• Lean to say no to things that matter less. Do not try to give attention to everything that comes your way.

• When it comes to web interaction, you should only look for specific information. There is a tendency of opening more webpages and clicking links that lead you to more links and before you know it, you are 5 hours into mindless browsing.
Every second, there are myriads of things, people, comments, news, and gossip craving for your attention. 99% of what you see online and social media and TV will not matter to you.

You are the keeper of your destiny and the holder of the key to your inner chambers. If you let everyone and everything into your inner sanctuary, it will become clogged, disorderly and unattractive and become heavily laden with things you do not need.
